WEEK 1-"STEPPING INTO THE WORLD OF TEACHING: WEEK 1 OF B.ED TEACHING PRACTICE - PHASE1" [14/07/2025 TO 18/07/2025]
"Teaching is the greatest act of optimism." - Colin Powell
I started my 40-day B.Ed teaching practice internship at Government Model Girls High School, Kollam, in Thevally. This first week was a blend of learning, challenges, and excitement as I navigated through teaching practices, interactions with students, and adapting to the school environment.
Day 1 - 14/07/25 - Monday
It was a mix of excitement and nerves as I took a 5E model class on "Atoms" for 8B students in Chemistry. I used simple analogies and experiments to convey the concept, and the pupils were highly interactive as I encouraged their participation. I felt a sense of accomplishment completing the lesson plan despite struggling a bit with using the whiteboard (not being used to it before). A bit disappointed I couldn't ask review questions at the end due to poor time management, but I did ask continuous questions throughout to reinforce the concept. We also participated in school gardening works and saw teachers conducting quiz.
Day 2 - 15/07/2025 - Tuesday
Today had two periods and a substitution. I taught "Molecules" in 8B (substitution period) using videos and slides since my teacher asked me to show experiments in the open auditorium later for both 8A and 8B. In the 6th period, I taught "Elements and Compounds" in an activity method using slides with tables, and students did a good job following my instructions. I supervised 9A during their PT in the auditorium in the 7th period. I felt a bit challenged making students understand chemical reactions but overall was happy with their participation.
Day 3-16/07/25- Wenesday
I had one class – 9B Physics on "Equations of Motion." I started with an activity-based lesson on distance and displacement using problems from the text. I used slides with photos for better explanation in this mixed-medium class (English, Malayalam, Tamil student). I worked harder than planned to make them grasp the math-oriented concept, didn't get time for review questions but asked questions throughout. I felt satisfied seeing everyone participate and write in their notebooks.
In the substitution period for 8B, I used an inquiry training model lesson plan on "How elements got their names" in Chemistry. I tried to use English as the medium a little bit more than before. Students asked many questions leading to the concept - it was a pleasant surprise! They were able to find element names related to countries, continents, and planets easily and some identified names of scientists too, showing their aptitude and extra knowledge about science and scientists. I helped them with elements originated from Latin names. I conducted an activity with element name cards, and students did well - they easily answered the ones originated from scientists, continents, countries, and some from Latin names too. I was so happy that they did it and the class was so good!
Day 4- 17/07/25 - Thursday
I had two classes in Physics – 9B ("Velocity") and 9A was cancelled due to a PTA meeting. In 9B, I used slides to teach velocity, using real-life examples, and guided them to solve problems. I took the class bilingually. Had substitutions in 10B too. Overall the class went good, and I felt teaching through problem-solving was effective.
Day 5 -18/07/2025- Friday
No classes as per timetable, I had only PT duty in 8B but didn't happen due to an educational strike. I prepared lesson plans and did preparations for "Chandradinam" celebrations with other trainees – made posters, quizzes, slides. Felt like a productive prep day despite no official classes.
This first week of teaching practice was a valuable experience, helping me understand the dynamics of a classroom, importance of adaptability, and the need for effective time management. I'm looking forward to learning more and improving in the coming weeks.
