"SPREADING AWARENESS, SAVING LIVES: OUR GOOGLE MEET PROGRAMME ON BLOOD DONATION"
"The blood you donate gives someone another chance at life."
On March 11, 2025, I had the privilege of participating in a Google Meet programme organized by the NSS (National Service Scheme) to raise awareness about blood donation. As an NSS volunteer from KUCTE Thevally, I was honored to represent our college alongside four of my fellow volunteers. The programme was led by Ratheesh Sahadevan sir, who expertly guided us through a comprehensive discussion on the importance of blood donation.
The session covered various topics, including the different types of blood donation: autonomous donation, voluntary donation, replacement donation, and payment donation. We learned about the rigorous testing process that donated blood undergoes, including tests for hepatitis and HIV. The separation of blood components, such as RBC, plasma, and platelets, was also explained.
We were informed about the essential criteria for blood donation, including the duration required to increase hemoglobin (Hb) count, which is 56 days for men and 84 days for women. The importance of a healthy diet, including iron-rich foods like muringayila, cheera, nellikka and aval, was emphasized.
The programme also highlighted the different types of blood donation camps, namely outreach camps and in-house camps. We were educated on the essential precautions to take before blood donation, such as:
- Getting at least 6 hours of sleep
- Having a good breakfast
- Avoiding antibiotics for 2 weeks
- Avoiding insulin
- Waiting 6 months after minor surgery
- Waiting 1 year after antirabies vaccination or blood transfusion
- Avoiding dehydration
- Eating well before donation
- Avoiding alcohol for 24 hours
- Avoiding smoking
- Waiting 1 year after getting a tattoo or piercing
The ultimate message of the programme was that even if we are not capable of donating blood ourselves, we can still make a difference by encouraging others to donate. This resonated deeply with me, and I feel inspired to spread awareness about the importance of blood donation.
