“CONSCIENTIZATION PROGRAM ON LIFESTYLE DISEASES: PREVENTION BEGINS WITH AWARENESS”

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” – Benjamin Franklin

As part of our B.Ed curriculum at Kerala University College of Teacher Education, Thevally, we, a team of ten teacher trainees., organized a conscientization programme on Lifestyle Diseases at Govt. Model Girls High School, Thevally. The session aimed to create awareness among students about the growing threat of lifestyle-related illnesses and the importance of self-care for a healthy future.

On 15 September 2025, at 3.00 p.m., the students of Classes 8A and 8B were gathered in the school hall for the programme. With the support of the school staff, we arranged the seating and multimedia facilities to ensure smooth conduct.

The session commenced with a prayer, followed by a warm welcome address. Smt. Baby Chithra, the Headmistress of GMGHS Thevally, inaugurated the event and encouraged students to adopt healthy habits early in life.

Each trainee presented a specific topic: from the introduction to lifestyle diseases, to in-depth discussions on obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases. The interactive segment included a breathing exercise activity, showing students simple yet effective ways to improve respiratory health.

To reinforce the key messages, we played an informative video highlighting preventive measures. The programme concluded with a detailed session on prevention strategies, emphasizing diet, exercise, and stress management.

Being part of this conscientization drive was truly enriching. I took the responsibility of delivering the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the Headmistress, teachers, and students for their active participation. It was rewarding to see how engaged the students were—asking questions, sharing their own observations, and even trying the breathing exercise with enthusiasm. Collecting their feedback confirmed that the programme made a positive impact.

The conscientization programme on Lifestyle Diseases was a memorable and meaningful component of our internship. Conducted through the collective effort of all ten trainees from KUCTE Thevally, the session successfully conveyed the message that health care begins with self-care. By educating young minds about prevention today, we hope to inspire a healthier tomorrow.
