TEACHING PRACTICE PHASE 2 – WEEK 2: EXPLORING, GUIDING, AND GROWING AT GMGHS THEVALLY (21/10/2025 to 25/10/2025)

“Teaching is the one profession that creates all other professions.”

The second week of my Phase 2 teaching practice at GMGHS Thevally unfolded with enthusiasm, challenges, and new learning experiences. Having already settled into the school environment, I approached each day with more confidence and preparedness. This week, I handled both Physics and Chemistry classes for 8th and 9th standards, managed several substitutions, and took part in various school programmes like the KITES Camp and ICT Camp. Each class gave me deeper insight into the minds of learners and helped me refine my teaching techniques.

Day 4 – 21/10/2025 - Monday

The fourth day of my teaching practice started with full preparation — lesson plans, slides, and activity materials were all ready. After the morning assembly, I began the day by correcting notebooks from class 9A and preparing for my series of classes and substitutions.

In 9A Physics, I taught "Acceleration due to Gravity” with a live demonstration of two objects falling from the same height. The class became engaging and interactive as students’ common misconception — that heavier objects fall faster — was cleared through observation.

In 8B Chemistry, I taught “Reaction of Calcium Carbonate with Acids” and “Hydrogen as the Common Component in Acids.” Since students had seen the experiment earlier, I showed them a video to refresh their memory and guided them through the ionization process and formation of hydronium ions with the help of slides.

In 9B Physics, I discussed a numerical problem related to “Acceleration of the Earth due to the Force of Attraction between Earth and an Aeroplane.” Students actively participated and concluded that the acceleration of Earth is negligible.

During the free hours, I checked notebooks, wrote lesson plans, and helped with counting KITES uniform T-shirts.

The day was quite packed and productive. Managing multiple classes helped me enhance my time management skills. I felt satisfied seeing students’ curiosity during experiments and demonstrations. It was fulfilling to realize how simple classroom activities could make abstract scientific ideas crystal clear to learners.

Day 5 -22/10/2025 - Tuesday

This day began with high energy as I had my regular 9B Physics class. I discussed “Acceleration due to Gravity on the Moon” and worked through numerical problems. Although the calculations were challenging, students listened carefully and actively participated in deriving the answers. Their enthusiasm boosted my confidence as a teacher.

Later, during a substitution in 9A Physics, I demonstrated the “Feather and Coin Experiment” through a video and explained how gravity acts in the absence of air. We also explored “Variation of g at Poles, Equator, and Center of Earth” using slides, which helped them visualize the concept better.

In another substitution hour with 9A, I revised the topic of “Gravitational Force between Earth and an Aeroplane.” Students were able to consolidate their understanding that the Earth’s acceleration is negligible while the object’s acceleration remains close to 9.8 m/s².

In 8B Chemistry, I taught “Reaction of Non-Metallic Oxides with Water to Form Acids.” Students performed litmus tests and watched videos of chemical reactions, which made learning interactive. My slides, arranged with tables and visuals, helped them grasp even difficult parts like ionization.

This day was a beautiful blend of theoretical and practical learning. I realized that when visuals and real-life examples are integrated into lessons, students grasp scientific concepts more easily. It was rewarding to see their growing confidence in solving numericals and participating actively in discussions.

Day 6 – 23/10/2025 - Wednesday

This day marked the KITES Camp, a one-day digital learning workshop for class 9 students. Since they didn’t have regular classes, I shifted my focus to 8B Chemistry. In the 3rd period, I taught the lesson “Bases.” I began by showing a video of burning magnesium ribbon and tested the resulting magnesium oxide solution with litmus paper. The demonstration caught the students’ attention immediately. We then moved to the reaction of calcium oxide with water and its identification as a base. With the support of videos and experiments, they easily understood hydroxides and alkalies.

In the afternoon, I assisted in serving the midday meal and was later assigned a combined 9A and 9B Physics session for the remaining students. I guided them through numerical problems from the gravitation chapter, helping them revise key ideas learned earlier.

Though the day was slightly different due to the camp schedule, it was refreshing and enjoyable. I learned the importance of flexibility as a teacher — being able to adjust lesson plans and still make the day academically meaningful. It was gratifying to see even a small group of students enthusiastically participating in revision work.

Day 7 - 24/10/2025 - Friday

The final day of the week began with the ICT Camp for class 8 students. I came fully prepared with lesson plans and teaching aids in case of substitutions. After the morning assembly, I collected and corrected the Physics notebooks of 9A and 9B students. I then spent some time checking the lab setup and completing my lesson plan and reflective journal entries.
During the free hours, I was asked to monitor 9B students. I maintained discipline, encouraged them to complete pending work, and clarified their doubts about Physics topics. Though I didn’t get to teach a full lesson that day in 9B, the quiet classroom interactions were equally meaningful. In 6th hr at 9A, I discussed “Acceleration due to Gravity on the Moon” and worked through numerical problems. Although the calculations were challenging, students listened carefully and actively participated in deriving the answers. Their enthusiasm boosted my confidence as a teacher.
This day reminded me that teaching isn’t only about delivering lessons — it’s also about guiding, mentoring, and maintaining an atmosphere of discipline and curiosity. It gave me space to observe students’ learning habits and understand the importance of teacher presence beyond academics.

Day 8 – 25/10/2025 - Saturday

Saturday was a working day at school; however, I couldn’t attend as I had a PSC examination scheduled on the same day. I had informed the concerned authorities beforehand and ensured that my lesson plans and class responsibilities were managed in my absence. Though I missed a day of school experience, appearing for the PSC exam was equally significant for my professional growth and future career prospects.
This day reminded me of the importance of balancing academic commitments and personal career goals. While continuous classroom presence is vital, preparing for competitive exams is also a part of a teacher’s journey toward self-improvement and long-term development.

The second week of my teaching practice at GMGHS Thevally was a period of steady growth and confidence-building. Each day enriched my teaching experience — from conducting experiments and demonstrating physics phenomena to handling substitutions and engaging students in active learning. The week taught me the significance of adaptability, preparedness, and the joy of witnessing students truly understand a concept. As I move forward, I carry with me a stronger sense of purpose, a deeper love for teaching, and an eagerness to make every classroom moment count.
